by Pollard, Edward A.
8vo, brown decorated cloth, 155 pp. Small stain on top of front cover, minor fading, previous owner's inscription on front endpaper, slight aging and foxing; overall a very good or better copy. A very nice copy. Edward Pollard (1831-1872) was born in Albemarle, Virginia, and would become a prominent southern journalist and historian. He was a prolific writer, and a very strong advocate of southern succession. He even ended up in prison, when he was captured trying to get to Britain to sell some of his books. The present work was originally published under the title: The Southern Spy; or Curiosities of Negro Slavery in the South. Not surprisingly, it paints a somewhat different picture of slavery than Uncle Tom's Cabin, which he refers to in this work. He seems to feel that the lot of slaves in America is better than factory workers in London, or serfs in Russia. This book is basically a collection of letters written by the author. ANB. OCLC.
