London, 1853. 12mo. xii, 119 pp. Test sailing of the so-called tubluar life-boat down the Manchester ship canal and then from Liverpool to London, a sometimes eventful voyage of two months. The narrative is interspersed with contemporary news reports and testimonials, including some negative reviews of rival lifeboats. A pretty copy, bound in original crimson cloth with gold cover lettering and all edges gilt. Light wear to spine ends but a very good copy of a scarce book.

These papers relate primarily to the sea battle between the British warship "HMS Leopard" and the American frigate "USS Chesapeake," that took place in 1807 off the coast of Virginia. "Leopard" attacked and boarded the American ship, searching for British deserters. "Chesapeake" was unprepared for battle and her commander, James Barron, surrendered her to the Brits.
