Guadalajara, Mexico: TALLER GRáFICA DE COMALA, 2022. First Edition. Hardcover. Craft paper pasted on boards. Fine. 24 pages. 23 x 17 cm. Signed, limited edition #31 of 100. TITLE: THE OLD METHOD OF ELABORATION OF THE TEQUILA MEZCAL WINE Described in the novel 'Nieves' in the 19th century by José López Portillo y Rojas - 1887. This exquisitely made artist book features a text written in 1887 by Mexican novelist José López Portillo y Rojas (1850-1923) - a short novel, entitled "Nieves". The author describes his family memories of the mezcal haciendas and old distillery factories. The artist, Nacho Gómez Arriola introduces this work with the thoughts: "Collective memory is composed of scraps of stories or personal facts recorded in time, which, when added, nourish and give identity to the communities." In this case, Gómez Arriola is referring to the community of Jalisco, and the "mezcaleras" or plantations of Agave Tequilana, and the evocative descriptions of the ancestral process of making mezcal. The artist made 18 engravings and three capitular letters printed from the original plates. The engravings, composition and manual printing of the typographic book were made in the Graphic Workshop of Comala De Ponte on artisan paper of cotton and agave fiber craft paper. It was composed in movable metallic types of the Garamond typeface and with the collaboration of the master typographer Salvador "Chava" Botello in Intertype. It was finished printing in times of Covid at the beginning of the year 2022. Text in Spanish. Signed and numbered by the artist on the colophon.
