Rare Cookbooks Stolen

This item was still reported missing as of June 11, 2019. On Monday, July 30th, staff at the San Francisco Public Library discovered that the screenplay Largo: a Story Out of the Life of George Friederich Handel was missing. The typescript piece had been on exhibition since April 2012 as part of a celebration of the birth of Harry Hay who co-authored the screenplay in 1938 with Reginald Le Borg. Photographs of the case indicate that the item was stolen between Monday July 23rd and Friday July 27th. The missing item is approximately 150 pages (8-1/2 x 11-inches), secured with two brass report clasps. The text of the title page reads: “ 'Largo' / A story out of the life of George Friederich Handel / Original Story by Reginald Le Borg / Screenplay by Reginald Le Borg and Harry Hay.” The Gay & Lesbian Center, San Francisco Public Library would appreciate any help in recovering this item. These items were still reported missing as of June 17, 2019. On Thursday, June 7, 2012, staff at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) at Saint John's University discovered that a 16th century printed book was missing from the work carrel of one of its catalogers. HMML staff conducted a thorough search of both HMML and Alcuin Library to ensure that the item had not been misplaced. The staff immediately reviewed a list of rare materials that had been used that week in presentations during a workshop being held at the library. It was discovered that two manuscript items from the Arca Artium collection were also missing, one of which had been used on Wednesday afternoon (June 6). It is believed that all three volumes were stolen. The manuscripts had already been photographed digitally and can be viewed in Vivarium, the online image service from the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (www.hmml.org/vivarium). Officers from Life Safety Services at Saint John's University and from the Stearns County Sheriff's Office began an investigative process that involved interviewing staff and library visitors. New security precautions have since been put into place. The missing books are: Item 1: Two printed works in Latin, together in one volume. (Call number: PA8517.D4 1532). These are bound in blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, with raised bands and two clasps. The volume measures approximately 16-17 cm X 10 cm X 4-5 cm. The two titles are: Desiderius Erasmus. D. The following two very large books were stolen from Edinburgh World Heritage Trusts Library from their former office at 5 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh between 18 November 2011 and 25 May 2012. 1. Nick Wilding of Georgia State University has announced on the EXLIBRIS mailing list his findings pointing to forgeries of Galileo material that appear to trace back to Marino Massimo de Caro, currently under arrest for thefts from the Girolamini Library in Naples. Dr. Wilding raises further questions about books that have recently passed through the trade bearing the the library stamp of Federico Cesi. Eighteenth century red morocco with gilt roll-borders, neatly rebacked and recornered, al edges in gilt, marbled endpapers. With the armorial bookplates of the Duke of Sussex, and Professor Cornelius Paine. A clear and concise treatise on the trees, bushes, plants and herbs found growing in woods, in thickets and on hillsides. There was a sequel mentioned in the text, devoted to fields and meadows including marsh and water meadows, and embracing inter alia mushrooms and fungi. This was published in 1543. An attractive copy of a rare work, the only edition to be published, and one of only a small number of titles printed by Francois Estienne from 1537. He was the son of Henricus Stephanus, founder of the great printing house, and younger brother of Robert. Adams, 1745.
